This is hanako and I am here with Anthony Michelle, Mike and Laurie and we are discussing episode 4 of The Last of Us and no II. You put your hand down. We are not starting with you yet. I already know where we're going and I already got something to say about you. You gonna put your hand down because Maury tried to start the podcast off and we hadn't even hit. Bored yet so Lori, you were not with us last week for episode 3. So go ahead real quickly and give us your thoughts about that. Before we get into episode 4, I never knew I wanted a bonus /, sidequest episode as bad as this episode. Oh my freaking God, I cried.

1:14 It was the most beautiful heartbreaking gut-wrenching. Awesome episode. I've ever seen in my life except for Stargate, Atlantis episode. 16. Season 3 when dr. Carson Beckett dice. That's all I'm gonna say. It was the best thing I've seen in years. It was, it was Sublime. It was perfect. I thought that in order for World building, it gave us the background that we needed for other than Joel and Ellie and what was happening with the infected. But at the same time, it kind of brings to what would be if If it was us, if we were stuck in our homes or apartments, and we had a loved one, and we just sort of, you know, you know, kept my, husband's a prepper.

2:02 So I've got stuff like five years, so it's like, we never leave our apartment and we go outside, come back in, you know, maybe check on the car and, you know, we're together and we grow old and one of us get sick and we have to take care of each other. We realize that this is the end and we're going to prep for I Lord. Help me Jesus. I swear to God it was some of the best television. I've seen in my entire life, that's my take. Okay, all right. And before we get to Mike, I want to do, I'm just gonna do something a little bit different because we have started getting some interactions on our YouTube page. You know, we started posting our videos maybe about half a year ago and it's slowly kind of building up and we have some comments on our YouTube page. So I just want to go ahead And read those so response to our video covering episode 1, we have Shari Perez who posted, she said, love this, yes.

Anything else we talk about this episode. When I say, I watch this episode and I was like, oh my God, Mike and Ellie Arthur Kindred Spirits with the Fucking bad jokes. Oh, nope. I watch this episode. I had to call Maury. I was like, I don't know, Maury, I think she might be my daughter. Somehow I'd say they think we like, she is me.

4:38 I am her. I'm like, what the hell? Like this is like, I'm like, okay, she's sarcastic, she loves dad jokes. She does, she does stuff she's not supposed to do. I'm like, that's not. Like, that's me. That's like a female version of me to say that first joke. And when it came out I said, oh my God. Mike is on the show. Yeah exactly. It doesn't matter how much you push the envelope. It'll still be stationary. That's my I love. That was like that. I love that joke. very cursed joke, she told I was like, oh my God, Mike is probably sitting there watching this like We're going about like I'm surprised, you know, but the last one, where is where she said?

5:37 She said, what she said. That diarrhea is hereditary, isn't? It's in the genes. I was like, like, yes, I'm like, it's like that first. I was kind of like, okay, she's sarcastic, just cool. That was like, wait, she's literally is like a little female version of me. This is weird. Especially at this episode when she was like, she had those, she got the magazine and she was like, oh, She was like why the pages stuck together? I was like, oh my God. I was like nah. With the magazine at first, I thought she picked up like, hmm. I thought it was a little bit more risqué and then I looked I was like, okay, can't be that bad because he's actually clothes on the cover.

6:27 And then when she starts like, oh, like, what are they doing? Oh yeah. I was just fucking, which I was like this little girl. I don't care how old she says. She is this, this is an old soul in a young body. Like she has wait for someone who has never experienced the world. She has way too much of it up here, how to, you know, how to make the jokes, how to how to fuck with them. Because I mean she was doing that with with him and test just kind of like fucking with them. And I'm just like she just um this little this little girl has been here before she has been out more than she is told them she has but she has a little bit too much world and knowledge and just watching her in this episode I was just like This kid like I can see how she's going to become important to Joel you know and you even start to see that towards the end of the episode when they have the shootout, the way he's looking at her. When he's telling her you're going to go in that hole and you're going to do this and you're going to be safe and they're not going to shoot you like I think that's when it started to shift from cargo to.

7:35 Oh my God. This is a little kid that I need to take care of. And I think her telling those jokes throughout the whole So you know, throughout the whole episode, I feel like maybe Sarah was that kind because we got to see a little bit of Sarah's humor in the first episode. Not as much as this, but we did see that she was also a kid who likes to joke around with her dad and I feel like Ellie starting to break those walls down with Joel. And it was because she was telling all of these fucking dad jokes. I also think it was time to, I think he's never really spent. Hasn't spent time with kids or children until now and he may he may have forgotten what it was like because he a kind of closed himself off and now he's got her and you know he's they've been together what?

You could have at least tried to butter me up first, First, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Let me leave the jokes to me and Ellie. Okay calm down with that. Now we have to buy that book. If you Google Ellie's areas dad jokes, you can find the list of all the jokes from the game. No, dude. What is it just seemed like that? Why would you do that?

So however long they been together. However, long, he's been those walls like you said, they have no choice but to come down. Yeah. Also that magazine scene is on taking directly like literally directly from the Game. Like this is the they put up side by side with her holding a magazine is like the same scene directly in this in the game. Okay.

9:54 Do they have that same magazine like the men of those different magazine but it was like the same content, you know? Yeah. Okay but anyway so the episode starts out with Ellie. You you remember in the last episode when she was at billion francs, she happened to get her hands on a gun and Joe does not know that. She has his gun. So we see her at the beginning of the episode and she's in a bathroom. A very like, I understand you don't have a lot of choices, but you would not catch me in some of these bathrooms that they have. Anyway, she's in there. She's looking in the mirror and she's like, pretending like she's shooting. Now while she's there, she looks. She takes the mag out of the gun and she takes the other bullet out.

10:47 I was like, this ain't her first time handling a gun. Yeah. She's had training. Like she has. Like she yeah, like properly handling that gun. I was like, oh shit. She okay. Yeah. And I know she I know she goes the federal school but we haven't really like we know it's a military school because it's run by Federer the military. But we never been told yet. Exactly what they're training them or you know what their schooling down. And like we know that she knows some basic things. We know that there are other things, she doesn't know. And when, you know, Joe pressed her about it, she was like, it's a shootie school. So I was like, okay, I'm get, I'm guessing they are training these children to be soldiers from a young age because again, at least 14, So yeah, you have the Child Soldier aspect to that, which I'm like, yeah, I don't really like that.

11:46 But then, again, they live in a world of infected people that can kill you. So, I guess there really isn't a choice about that. But, you know, I just think that kind of lends itself to us, seeing, from the very beginning of the episode that, as much as Ellie has a child, and we see her Access to certain things in a childlike way. She's almost an adult in other ways, too, which is sad because again, this is all she's ever known, you know. So anyway, then she said, you know, they go out, they're actually getting gas. And, you know, when I thought about it, when I looked at it, I was like, okay.

12:29 So this is what we were talking about last week and then I was like, no, he siphoning gas out of the cars. So I don't know if It's just that they didn't make it to one of their little stashes. Or if it's just as Joel said, you know, he was talking to Ellie about the gas because she was asking she was like, so how often are we going to have to do this? And he was like, well, you know, gas when it sits for so long it starts breaking down. This gas is almost like water. Now, you know, and he had the conversation, he was like, yeah, 20 years ago, we could have gone like A Long Way to the 12 hours with this anyway, here's my problem though. I'm like I need a scientist to really tell me how long gas lasts because depending on shows is either two years. This is 20 years.

13:26 I'm having a hard time believing it. There was even water in the tank. Well yeah. Cuz you would, you would think that if it was water would have evaporated by now? So I'm like, well, it depends upon the mineral content. It depends upon whether or not you've got a high or a little evaporation rate from the container and also depends on the grade of gas. That is there an average gas station with gas should be able to sustain ably hold gas, continually renewing for up to four to six months?

14:19 If it's been sitting in stagnant, going to get separation after about four to five years. So typically gasps that's a is in a container, in your garage that gas is good for two to three years. If it's in a gas station sitting in the tank, it's good for another five to seven. So What about your 15? Your gas is going to start breaking down and buy your 17 18 19, you're going to get the water but you can still, if you can spin it, evaporate it out, bring it down. You should be able to pump it get areata and you should be able to get some gas. But yeah, what they're saying is actually true. Oh thank you, sorry working engineering and I kind of hear this all the talking but what gas station should be getting gas from?

15:04 That's nothing. On the left, you know, the one in those sticks, but basically, no, they the one thing that I noticed about the show is that the science quote. Technology is pretty much the way that it should. It kind of should track. Unlike a lot of shows is very realistic so but yeah, no, the gas is about work, should be because it will break down after about 20 years. Okay. Okay, so road trip. You're on the road trip, you know. L he's talking about the things that she wants to see because I think Joe mentioned something about a tank in the way she got killed like she was like how I see a tank.

And let me tell you, it was so depressing watching them, go through the countryside and seeing the abandoned roller coaster and seeing all of the military vehicles just out. In the field just kind of willy-nilly with other cars. I was like, yeah, there was a fight there or something there, but just watching that scene, be signed for loves the gas station. And the Arby's, Arby's must be sponsoring the show because they've mentioned them twice. This twice, two references to our two episodes in a row, but you know, I'm sitting here looking at the sound like, oh, that's like when I take my road trips to New York away. Whatever.

16:41 It's just I don't know seeing it kind of wasted in that way was sad and I was like you can see Ellie is This is something that she, you know, she's never been out in the world. So these are things that she's saying for the first time and then the way that she's experiencing them, it's like nothing. Like they used to be the Stars, the fact that she could see the star so clearly, because there was no pollution in the air, I was like, okay, I would like to experience that but not at the cost of the whole world turning into clickers and infected know that that will not be good.

17:22 But their road trip. So, of course they are, they pull over into the woods in the middle of the trip, so that Joe can get some rest. Because, of course, he's the only one driving and it was just interesting because again, you get to see her be a little bit like a kid. And you also see like a little bit of her. I guess and Joe both kind of let their guards down with each other. You know, she's again she's telling the joke like she started out. She was like, Joe can I ask you a serious question? He's like, yeah. Now this is a change already because remember, right before Tess died, he was like, look, you don't need to ask me any questions in that after she died. He was like we don't need to know each other's histories, you do you I'ma Do Me.

18:16 So the fact that he even let her ask a question, I was like, Okay, he's starting to lower down the wall and then she tells another damn bad joke. I was like, hmm, but he's gonna not like her, but when he turns over, you see, a smidgen of a smile on his face, I was like, okay, she's starting to break him down. She's starting to make him. Remember what? It was like to have a child at that age because remember Sarah was what 15 when she died. So, you know, listening to her kind of Talk about how safe they are. You know, are we, are we going to be okay, nobody's going to come here, right?

19:00 And at first she was like, No, in fact that he was like, no the effect is it? We're too far out, but that's not who we need to worry about. She was like, people. He was like, yeah, she said what they want to what did she say? I think she said what they want to kill us. And he was like they want to do worse and again for her not to be raised in the regular world when he said that, she knew exactly what he meant because she was just Like, oh, and she got a little serious and little quiet after that, but I don't know. I'm starting to like, well, I wanted to say, I'm starting to, like, I, like the way that they have been taking their time building this relationship between them to because I think if they would have felt if they would have forced it or made it move a little bit faster.

19:48 Well, I think that would have for me, felt disrespectful to the relationship that he had with his daughter, but to after 20 years, I don't think he would be that open to welcoming in another youngster that quickly. And it was just, I don't think it would have felt genuine to me. So I kind of like the way that this is taking its time to build the trust between these two characters. And so, you know, kind of find a bridge for them to become what I'm going to assume is a great Duo. Again, I do not play the game so I don't know exactly how their relationship is in the game like whether or not they do become as close as father and daughter or you know if it still remains kind of an arm's length thing. But Yeah, he starts giving her a little bit of information. You know, she asked him about Tommy, he starts telling her yes.

We get a little bit of background on, Tommy story being that, you know, when he was younger in high school, he decided to go off and join the, you know, military because he wanted to be one of those Heroes. He wanted to be a person that's saving the world and he said for a first, he said, he was just winner. Yes, he's a joiner. Yes. Joiner. so I guess that little, we see how Marlene got them because He's one of those people that's like, okay look I got to make a difference. I got to go save the world, I got to do something, I got to be a hero, you know. And Apparently something changed and I think Joe said he left Tommy left, and now he's got to go find him, he's got to go bail his little brother out.

21:44 I was like, okay, so this has been their thing. And of course, we already know that they're kind of strange right now. So I don't even know like I know, Tommy went to join the fireflies and I know that probably pissed jollof, but for them to not be speaking, which is kind of what the gist of. You know, the clues that he's given is like, they're estranged. I'm like what? What happened? That's my mama, in my mind. I feel like Tommy probably wanted to go save some people or say whatever they were trying to say and Joe's like nope. Nope, nope.

22:26 Nope. Because every time it's time to help somebody. What does he say? No, we're good reason though. A true true, but that's probably would be the thing that likes. But them apart, if Tom is always trying to be a hero, he joins different groups and trying to save the world and your brother is like hail naw. Hmm, yeah, yeah I want to say something before we go on I just think that Elias just like just breaking down his defenses. He's he has that wall up and her jokes. Keep chiseling down that wall. Her just being so good. Dad jokes, do they break tension? They ease the ease your mind. And they open you up to new things and to being a better person.

Like she was eating the Olive Garden. She was just like, aw, yeah. Was he even piece of steak. You can pick someone. I could think of, I can't think of a better Italian restaurant welcome. But look, I can't talk because right now, as we speak, I've got a story is Anya in the oven right now, okay? So let you know, Stover's is that joint though. Exactly.

No, my thing is, is that, you know, given the situation and given what's happening with everything, you know, the jokes and the, you know, the the lasagna and all that stuff. It's very refreshing. Because, usually when we have These type of stories, it's very strumming drum, it's very, you know, depressing or we're going to die. You know, I pull out my example of the 100. The hundred was an excellent show, but it was so depressing. Nobody had time for jokes, nobody had time for fun. If anyone even thought that they were going to smile the rest of the group got on their ass. So seeing this is refreshing and I love it.

Like she's not really wrong but I mean, if you hate me for the basis of your life was living on an arc in space and you got sent to, you got sent to Earth a possibly irradiated Earth as punishment. I wouldn't have reason to smile either, but that's a whole other story. We are not going to get a sister 100. This is true Anthony. Was I the only person who looked at them approaching this bridge and I was like, oh, here we go.

I mean they How many people there to siphon more gas from more broken down gas from? But yeah, Yeah, when you looked into the truck and saw that it was clear. I think he realized. I'm all alone. I was expecting that at the Bridge but instead they do drive around and they are going through what looks like the downtown area. And you know, there's an Alleyway where you see a lot of bodies that have been burned and the smoke is there still smoke? So this was recent, I was like, okay, so they've done this recently but then they pull up to the checkpoint for there in Kansas City.

This place is clearly been overrun or overtaken and it's at this moment here comes the person in the street. Oh help me help me. I was like huh and Joe absolutely not right, hit him. Looking at and you know, like Alias like are we going to help him do like no I was like that's something that I have to get used to because so many in so many shows.

Yeah you there and Joe I mean from job Tom is trying to pull over you know there's a there's a couple. They got a kid, we got a kid to.

If you didn't seem to trust other people even from the beginning. Yeah. Yeah. And so things like he's very to himself and I don't know if that's if that's just something that he's precautious about or if it's something that maybe is a trauma response. Because I mean if you think about it, we don't know anything about Sarah's mother.

29:45 We don't know where she is, where she was. We don't know, you know, if she died how she died, you know, she could have died from natural causes. She could have died from illness or she. Anna died from a violent event. We just know that she wasn't in the picture at the time that all this went down so that could be a response to that. Yeah. Okay, so this is what helping people can get you you know, that maybe they stopped to help someone it turned by, we don't know. And I don't know if they explain that in the game or not, but I haven't heard anything. So it's just one of those things where I feel like his precaution has only deepened in Twenty years since that first night, because on that first night, you know, hey, we had, we had to kind of run over some folks or run through some folks, to try to get to safety. And it's a good thing we did, because if you remember that scene in the town, when everyone was coming out of the movie theater, Everything was moving so fast, you would not have been able to tell who was infected and who wasn't you just saw people fighting.

30:55 You saw people grabbing other people and like I said you don't know if they're grabbing you know if they're grabbing their friend to say come on let's go or if they're grabbing their friend to infect them. It was there was too much going on and these damn infected and these clickers. They run. So you don't have time to think you don't have. Have time to make second-guesses. So I guess Joel is like okay you know what, if they're not with me and mine, welcome, we got to gummy survival of the fittest. You can't, you can't you can't be out here doing no doing charity work, because you'll end up getting up, getting eat up and up.

31:37 And we see his instincts are right, because when he drives past the guy as the as he's driving, Ellie starts noticing, hey, there's people on the roof. Not with guns. And then you get the spikes in the road and they crash into an old and they do it. They do a cinder block through his windshield. I was like, damn, they people. They ain't fucking around here, like, give me all your shit that they didn't get away. But, you know, I think if this point to, they didn't really know who Joe was, you know, cuz we find out later on an episode, they're looking for someone. And at this point, we don't know what that person looks like. So it could be, it could be that they think that it's somebody.

32:17 Buddy with these people. We don't even know who these people are at this point. So they could be the good good guys. They could be got bad, guys. We just, we just don't know. Yeah. But one thing that bothers me about all of this is, like, you didn't even. I know we were talking about not helping people but you can even be like, hey, you know, who are you, where do you doing what's going on? You know, there was no attempt at communication, we just going to take your shit. See what if you got? Kill you and move on. You know, I don't know if this is this seems pretty pretty, bleak way to have an existence, you know, and it's Michelle's been watching fear, the fear the walking day and, you know, people keep trying to build communities. I'm trying to help people and this is like the complete opposite.

Yeah, but I mean, this is something Joe has also been saying since the first episode. So and this is something that that we know, I mean, you have you have people like the battery guy in the first episode, he supposed to be on Joel and Tessa side and what does he do? He stills from them. He still is the one thing that he knows they're looking for and tries to sell it off to Marlene, you know? Yeah, it's just People are not.

33:51 In a regular World in a world like ours, where we have access to resources, where there are other people where there are rules in place that supposed to separate the bad from the good in a world like this, a lot of people aren't their best. You know what I'm saying? So you put them in a world that's ruled by the deadliest pandemic known to man something that there is no cure from. You put them in a situation where, you know, like I said, the quarantine Zone has been cleared out. We don't know why. We don't know how but chances are that was people as well.

34:32 We already know the fireflies have been rebelling against the bedroom, so it could be the fireflies. It could be a whole different group. I mean, even towards the end of the episode, I don't know if I feel like these people are the fireflies. I feel like their whole different contingent but you put people in those kind of situations where they've been controlled for so long Federal, you know, controlling where they can go, where they can leave the qz. How much they earn for their rations? You put them in a situation like that and then put them out on the street where there's even less resources.

35:15 Yeah. People are going to turn, they're going to be like, oh, you know what? I don't know what you I have but I know you have a nice shiny. Well, taken care of truck. That means that you have means somewhere, you have resources somewhere. You didn't just pick this up off the street and say, oh let me, you know, let me try to boost this and see if it'll go know this thing has been well taken care of. It runs, it's clean. So guess what? You might have some things that we need in there. So we're just going to take you. They don't care if it's a man in a child in there. They really don't. Aunt. You know, they just, they're just looking to, I don't know, take care of themselves.

35:57 And I mean, we see that in all kinds of stuff Lori mentioned, the 100 you guys meant your fear, The Walking Dead, we talk about The Walking Dead, all the time. You see that in just about all of our villains, in those types of stories, that's kind of how they started, they didn't have. And they saw somebody that did and they were like, oh, okay, it's time for me to take no negotiation. No. Hey, can we? Share, this. Can we work together? No, it's I'm going to take from you first and then I figure it out later. Which is a sad I mean, which is a sad commentary on human nature. But as I think, Mike said it in this episode and we have said it and other, you know, review other shows times like this is survival of the fittest. And sometimes that survival means you have to be willing to do things that you may not have done in a past life or you may not have done a few years ago in order to protect yourself. That's what you do.

What your mindset is and you know, how willing are you to put aside everything that you were raised and taught as a person to be DC. These Second panel is going to be a what if styled panel and it's exploring the character of Maggie Greene, you know, she has been through so much during her time on The Walking Dead. And I feel like personally, I feel like in the last two seasons season 10 and 11, we started to shoot, see a little bit of a shift with her character and I just, if maybe we are looking at the start of a villain origin story with her character, After we do know that she and Negan will have a spin-off that is airing a little bit later this year was supposed to Premier.
