In the country of Ravka, the The Shadow Fold is a mysterious wall of shadow that extends from one end of the country to the other, separating Ravka from the rest of the world. In the midst of war,  Alina and her best friend Mal find themselves in the middle of a prophecy that will not only change the course of their lives, but could also change the course of their country. Their only goal is to stay together and protect each other as they have done since childhood, but an unknown secret could tear them apart - if the monsters in the Fold don't do so first.
