The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Preview - Fandom Hybrid Podcast #251

0:24 What's up, hybrids? Welcome back to another episode of the Phantom Hybrid Podcast. This is Hanukkah and I'm here with Casey and Michelle and we're doing something a little bit different. Today AM C has released the 1st 10 minutes of the new Daryl Dixon Show and I just wanted to come on and talk to the girls and find out what they think about this, this 1st 10 minutes. Because I have, I have some commentary and I was like I don't know if I can wait till September to say some of this stuff because I might not think about it in September. But Daryl Dixon, So they give, they've given us the 1st 10 minutes of the show.

1:10 A lot of it. I think when I won't say a lot of it, but we've seen part, yeah, of it, the whole walking across the countryside. We've seen that in one of the teaser trailers. There is a lot of stuff in here that we have not seen or that hasn't been previously released. So it does give you some things to think about. But okay, we're going to start from the top because that's where my commentary started coming in. And I was like, oh, I probably should be recording this as a reaction. But anyway, so we've seen the trailers where you see Daryl floating on top of an overturned boat, and this is how the show starts with him in the middle of the ocean. First of all, I was like, see, it's a shame that the ocean is so clean because people ain't there to fuck it up. That was my first thought.

2:05 I was like, oh, OK, so it's going to be one of these kind. That ocean was blue. It was beautiful. He's floating in the middle of it. And the current takes him right to the beach. So when he gets off the boat, he's sitting there, he's just kind of looking around. And then he sees a blue pail, kind of, you know, on on the beach. He crawls from out the ocean to this pail and the pail has water in it and he drinks the water from the pail. I'm like, I'm like, fuck are you. You had a whole ocean that you was just in and you had to go get The Who, the, The Who knows how long it's been sitting beach water in the pail to drink. I was like, OK, we're.

2:55 Not it was rain water. Maybe it was rain water. You know it's better than salt water. Yeah, cuz you can't do salt water you. Drink salt water like that. So. Maybe just rain water in the middle of the tide and I'm just saying. Or maybe because it was in the bucket, the sun had enough time to? Hit it and purify. I can't. It's purifying water. I can't. Yeah. Well, the smart thing was to tie yourself to the to the boat. He did, yeah. That's that's fantastic. Yeah. We still don't know, like, right, how he found himself.

3:38 I'm sure we'll figure out why and how but. Yeah, but the other thing, you were you. Floating around didn't wake you up, but you hitting that water woke you up. Right, that part. It's probably unconscious, I don't know. But the other funny thing that made me say okay we got to talk about this trailer is because I was looking when he fell into the water, I was like, that is probably the longest exposure to water Derek has had him. 15 Oh, now you clean, clean with those salted water. But I'm not going to go through the whole 10 minutes. They were just, like I said, there were certain things that just kind of grasped me.

4:22 One of the things that we had talked about just amongst ourselves, you know, one of the things we've talked about in the shows is the fact that these radios seem to have like long range powers. But now we know he wasn't talking into a radio in the trailers. He was actually speaking into a recorder, which okay makes perfect sense. You know that he he found on this boat, this boat had been abandoned. He found a couple of supplies, he found a a bottle of half drunk water. What was it that you said about the water? One of y'all said something about the oh that was no, that was Anthony. Before we started recording, he was like, did he not test to see if that water was fresh or what this like people were doing with that water? No you don't And and it's been in that bottle of very long long it looks like long time.

5:19 You know how when the when you have water and then your kids be like, hey, let me get some. And then look all cloudy out of the back. Wash Yes. He drank back Wash, right? Drunk it down too, right? But I think The funny thing really was, so when he gets on this boat, he starts looking around, oh, actually, before he gets to the boat, when he's walking through whatever town he is in, which we later find out maybe Marseille, he looks at a sign and the sign is in French and he's just looking like like, how the hell what? OK, And then when you see the scenery one, they did such an amazing job with the scenery, with the city and the the, the pier and the boats.

6:07 I thought it looked so cool for like to see somewhere totally different and. How the effects of the Walker Apocalypse. You know what it did to the city. But when we see him and he, you know, he gets this, he gets the stuff off the boat and he kind of leaves and he starts walking through the countryside again, I'm struck by the complete lack of walkers. Or anybody or anybody like and I'm sure with and you. Know what? You know what? What killed me with this? Because once he got into the flower shop, nursery, whatever he was in, nothing in your history with walkers would make you think I'm okay and just make all this goddamn noise. That's the other thing I had the issue with with history. I would like Walker 101.

7:03 Have you been in France for so long that you forgot that you're supposed to check to see if any dead are in the building? Like who? What did you do with Daryl Dixon? And because he was one of the ones, that was when they went into the supply, when they when they were dormant. He was one of the ones there. So you know they'll they'll they'll if there's no activity, because you see ain't shit going on in this damn town. There's no noise, there's no nothing. So they going to lay dormant until they hear noise and you and then because shit overhead trying to, I mean trying to find you something to eat, smelling this and opening that. And not like the hands rising up, I heard nothing.

7:48 When you stab the Walker. The ground sizzled. Hold on, That's not. That part that because I saw it may smoke, it's a little poof. I was like, what in the fuck are we dealing with like? Right about that, too, Variant Walkers. I want to know what the fuck this shit is. And it wasn't just the one, Walker. It was all of. It was all of them, and that was one that grabbed his arm. Burnt the mess out of his arm, his skin. I was like. And you know the first thing that came to my mind? Yeah, cut his arm off.

8:30 That's what I felt like he was thinking when he sat there. He was just looking like he had his hand. He had his head in his hands like. I know. And I'm thinking thinking I'm fucked. And I'm thinking fear, Radiation. Radiation walkers. Radiation walkers. Gotta get away. Dollar in a regular building. It didn't look like a lab. It looked like it might have been an antique store or garage or something. Why the fuck are your walkers burning? Why are they like, why do they have acid? Because, I mean, that's the only thing I can think of is it's like acid.

9:10 I'm. I'm not the science person. Michelle explain that. I can't explain it, I mean I have questions. I have questions. Is this from an experiment like I don't know? But. It was all of them. It was so. And it is acid like I mean. Did France get some acid rain we ain't know about or did they try to bomb that area? But I mean if you. The area doesn't look bombed, so it doesn't look bombed like even and it. Look like they died from in their shelter. So they hit out because it looks like that's where they were living. So I don't know. I don't know.

9:53 But those walkers I was, I was like when he walked in, first of all, he left the door open. Yes, I know that there are. People like he ain't like he brand new. He act like this his first day, like he brand new. I was like, why are we leaving the door open? And then why are we? Why are we just all of a sudden going to the table and looking up stuff instead of checking around to see what the fuck is going on? I was like, is this Darrell this or is this someone else? Because it's got. To be somebody else, maybe. Maybe. Well, no. He know who he is because he got for recording. My name is Darrell Dixon. I'm from the Commonwealth.

10:34 Yeah, but they're different writers. Look at me now. I'm like, this is a different set of writers. Maybe they forgot. If they forgot, they don't need to be right in the damn show because there are certain things. You can't make you can't. No, I know you scout out the area. He didn't scout the area, maybe got relaxed from think thing. He did mention Commonwealth, so maybe got relaxed from being in the Commonwealth. I don't. Know not. Make one of the most skilled hunters. Fighters, strategists, all these. Things I'm I'm trying to help out but I'm I'm on your, I'm on your side. I'm trying because he's in a different fucking country. He just can't decide.

11:15 But Walkers is fame no matter where you go, right? And I know that you know why you're walking the countryside like we barely saw walkers. I think I saw walkers when he was walking on the top of that bridge. You can see on the lower level of that bridge you can see a few walkers walking around now he kept to the high ground, so I will give him that, but still nobody. And I'm surprised that Walker's walking around. If there's nobody walking around, then Walker shouldn't be walking around. That's my. That's what I'm saying. They should be dormant. Yeah, so we shouldn't even see the walkers at the bottom of the bridge walking unless there's somebody there. But it looks like it's nowhere, there's nobody in these areas.

11:57 Unless they heard him walking up and and it woke them up. But of course they don't. They don't see him. They just know that somebody's walking. Because, I mean, if he's walking up on that bridge, that bridge is made of stone pebbles could be dropping down. So I get that part I I get it. But not one person, not one. And we don't know, we don't know how long he's traveling. This could be weeks because when you look at the the map he was tracking from Marseille to I forgot what city that was. But I was like, that's not no short trip. And then if you look at the way he was walking by the time he got into the place. That wasn't his man.

12:42 No, that wasn't his map. But. He it wasn't his map but he was looking at it because when you when he was listening to the tapes of the the father who left The Who recorded his tapes he said something about them landing in Marseille. So that kind of gave gave Darryl an idea of okay. This is where I am. But obviously he, he has an idea where he's going because he literally looked at a specific town or a specific city and tracked his finger on the map for it wasn't like he was saying, oh, let me go to Paris, let me go here. No, he went to a specific city and was like, so I'm like, obviously, you know, we keep saying we don't know what the fuck Darrell is doing in France. We do know what we do know, at least the information that has come out of San Diego Comic Con.

13:40 Supposedly this takes place only a few months after the end of The Walking Dead. So Daryl has been going back and forth to the Commonwealth looking for Rick and Michonne. We know that from the season, the series finale, maybe because because it's CRM, we already know that they have flight capabilities. We know they have helicopters. I don't know if they have vehicles that will be able to take them long range, but maybe he got a tip he was trying to figure some things out. You know, what was the thing that he said? He went looking for something and he he found trouble instead. So maybe he ended up trying to figure out where Rick was. Maybe something told him okay, he's no longer here, he's over there.

14:30 That was one who's going to keep his promises If he says I'm going to go find Rick and I'm going to bring him home. If Rick then traveled to Japan, Darrell is going to go out his comfort zone to go find Rick. Especially now that he knows that there's a possibility, a strong possibility that Rick is alive, Strong enough that Michonne left her kids to go find him because Judy said bring my dad home. So I have a feeling he has a purpose in France. It's just weird to think about Darrell going to France. You know Darrell, who had never left Georgia prior to the zombie apocalypse, right? And to the point of, you know that Shawn has left the kids. You're supposed to be with the kids, but you also need the kids to look for them.

15:19 But you know what? I mean. If nothing else, him also being a strong character, knowing with Shawn, like come on now. Just stay where he is. Yeah, but but you know what? In in in the zombie apocalypse. And I get what people say. Nobody likes to stay still. Nobody want to be at home. Not only that, but it's like there's something that you could be doing to help. Like OK2. Hairs are better than 1/2, sets of eyes are better than one. Michelle has been gone at this point. 6 maybe. I mean, well, I don't know how long it's been. I don't think it's been that long, but she's been gone long enough.

15:59 And maybe Darrell was like, OK, now that I know that he's a lot OK Darrell is the best tracker they have in the group, so why would you not want him to go? But if. He's the best tracker they have in the group. He would have found him close as long as I'm sorry he remember he's out there for months. Remember the whole Leah love story? He was out there for months searching for Rick. But Rick was on the helicopter. He can't track. He can't track in the air. Rick left in the helicopter. But he can track that there was a helicopter. Yeah, I was going to say they don't even know about the helicopters, which again, is something else that I have an issue with because how Jada's going to be in the lookout at Alexandria and see a helicopter, Nobody else does that shit. But I digress.

16:45 I. Digress. We getting into the weeds. We're not. Going to do that, but yeah. So the 1st, 10 minutes, they look interesting enough. Like I I feel like they don't answer questions about Darryl being in France. But at least what I see here I'm like okay. It feels like he ended up there. Maybe not on purpose, but it was kind of like a a, a a side mission for whatever it was that he was doing. Maybe maybe some people. Because again we know that there's a connection with the walkers and with France. We saw that at the end of World Beyond which Michelle, I know you haven't seen it but if you go look at the just the end credits scene, that will tell you all you need to know about France and the walkers.

17:34 So. So we know he's still on this mission. Like he said in the recording, he was like you know if something happens to me, I want them to know that I tried. Hell, I'm still trying. So we at least get that much. But I I'm still. It's just no people. No walkers. And then you have Daryl Dixon making dumb decisions coming into this building and now you have this injury you. I know he picked up bandages from the boat and I know he may have found something, but I'm like it's something about this ain't. Right It'll.

18:17 Be an infection, right? Because you burn it and part of him probably think for real, for real. Damn, I got to cut my arm off or this is the end. Which then now that that 10 minutes puts into perspective the none thing when you see that the heat is burning and they try to, they probably cauterizing his arm or whatever that puts that into perspective, right. And even with the. Yeah, OK. So yes, I'm looking right now in the background. He's walking across that bridge. There's 123-4567, eight. There's 9 walkers straggling at the bottom. That's very interesting, but but I don't see walkers anywhere else in this landscape.

19:06 Even when they show, they show him on this. I don't necessarily want to say mountain peak because I don't think it's a mountain. I'm not familiar enough with France's landscape to know where they are, but I do see like 2-2 pillars in the background. But even then you don't see anything. No people, no, not even a a miniscule person way over here in the corner. You don't see any of that when he walks through that town, you know, you see like all this different stuff you see riding on the walls, no people and all of the walkers that that he does come across, at least the dead ones, you know, they've all been, they've all been stabbed through the head.

19:54 So I'm just, I don't know. It's intriguing. But at the same time I'm like please don't don't start this show out making. Making decisions or making, you know, whatever, that doesn't make sense because he just walks in here, he's looking around, he doesn't do the banging on the door, see what comes out. And I mean, I I get it. He's looking, he's like, oh, this is open space, but still, you got tables, you have tar. There's plenty of shifts for something to hide. Even if not a Walker.

20:34 There's enough places for people to hide. There's tables with table coverings over them. Somebody could have hit up on the there. It's just I just. Now I wouldn't have banged on the out that hairless. Yeah, and I wouldn't bang on the outside, but I can see going there being quiet because if you bang on the outside you don't want to attract anything around the area and shit around the area. He didn't even go. He didn't come in. Quietly either he could have came in quietly and still like checked to see if there was any available walkers. Oh, and here's the other thing. So when the when the first Walker knocks over the flower pot, he looks at it and he backs up like he's scared. When I come the knocked over and you saw the Walker you should have been over there with that staff killed him over with. Then you would have seen all the other You're not afraid you could have took off.

21:35 We know he's not afraid of the hand to hand combat and also so the fact that the Walker got to his arm. Why are your sleeves pushed up? I just have. I just have questions. This is not the Darrell Dixon that I'm used to. Maybe if it's, it's almost like you. You know what Carl said when they first got to Alexandria, He was like, I don't want us to get weak. I feel like that's like the kind of version we're seeing of Daryl. And I know he's probably traumatized. He's all the way in France from Virginia. We don't even know how he got there.

22:16 We don't know what what route he took. We we don't know how long he was floating on the ocean. We don't know how long he's had to walk across this countryside with no food, no sustenance, no water, no nothing. I get it. All of this could be fucking with him. But this is not the Darrell. I am used to making those kinds of decisions, making him. A Not badass. Yeah, how about? We go back to the if Darrell dies, we riot Darrell. Yeah, Yeah. So you know, like I said, I'm going to tune in because it's The Walking Dead and it's Darrell and I feel like whatever they're going to do, they're going to, they're going to redeem this.

23:00 But I'm like the 1st 10 minutes, y'all have me asking more questions and being upset as opposed to being excited. I'm like, wait, why is he making what? They did. They did too good of a shop on the job on the original show to have the secondary shows be bullshit with dumbass unexplainable, making our characters who we've grown to love and know so much. Make them these remedial characters who don't remember shit like you ain't been killing walkers for the last 20 goddamn years. That that so OK I'm I'm I'm going to shut up about it now I just those are some things I just had to get out like why? And I I I get what y'all was saying about the the him being on the beach and the water.

24:00 But I also feel like from where that beach bucket was, the tide would have come in that that could have easily have been seawater. And at that point and at that point, if you're if you're as dehydrated, you're going to drink anything, I would have just as quickly turned around and drank from that blue water as opposed to that water that probably has sand in it. I'm just saying, I mean, I know this is Darryl. This is the person who eats all kinds of shit off of, you know, off of fire. I get it. I get it. The fish. Look fire, though. The fish look good. The fish look good.

24:42 You didn't see walkers in the water like you did in a dead city, so that's a good thing. But okay anyway, I think that's all I have to say about that. Do y'all have anything else to say about that? Okay. So the show comes out September 10th. It will be on AM C plus September 7th, so we will be covering the show. I'm going to try to like rain in my expectations and and wait to see what the first episode reveals before I start going off on the writers.

A little bit over a month. So yeah. The devil this shows. Yeah. So that no, this is not preproduction. This is not oh, let's see how everybody thinks about it. Then we go in and make changes.
