0:25 What's up, hybrids? Welcome back to another episode of the Phantom Hybrid Podcast. This is Hanukkah and I'm here with Casey and we are discussing Daryl Dixon Season 1, Episode 5. This is the penultimate Episode 4 Season 1, and unfortunately, we won't hear Michelle's thoughts because she's been the one this time, traipsing all over the place. But no, seriously, she just got back. She and Anthony just got back from Cruise. They were celebrating Anthony's 50th birthday a little bit early. So we're going to let her rest, and I'm sure she's going to have plenty to say when we get ready to discuss the season finale. So let's talk about this episode because this is the episode where we finally, finally find out how the hell Daryl got to France.

1:16 And let me tell you, I think one of the things we have been talking about with Daryl is how he keeps trying to help other people instead of taking his ass home. And that's exactly how he got in this position. Exactly. Which, OK, I'm not going to say that I blame him. I'm not going to say he was wrong. He was trying to help somebody who was clearly out of their league, not really able to fend for themselves well on their own. But there were you in that temper? I guess, look, I guess in a way that could be the reason why he's not doing so much over in France, 'cause he's like, look, last time I lost my temper I ended up on a boat.

2:02 Or the last time I lost my temper, I got one of my best friends killed. How about there? You know what? We're not going to talk about that. That was so far. That was how long ago? It shows a pattern. It shows a pattern. When? We're not gonna, does it not. We're not gonna. Do does it show a pattern? Yes it does. Darrell need to mind his self and and for that matter, because my whole thought was we've known since season. When did Alexandria get introduced Season 3? That was four, I think 4. OK, so if at least since season 4 of the original Walking Dead series, we've known that Darrell has a a liking to people, he may not always be like inviting.

2:55 Yeah, he may not be very inviting, but Aaron saw something in him that says you would be good with people. So in knowing this about yourself and you see that these older men are heckling this young boy and then now they're trying to make him a little little Gopher. Go get our little wood. Chop wood for us and we'll let you come out. You attempted to help him by showing him how to chop the wood, but you wouldn't take it. That next step to your eye. Come under my wing low key. Well, you know where I kind of sort of understand that mindset because Daryl's whole purpose at that point was I'm I'm just trying to get my fuel and go back home.

3:41 And if you if you pick up, I don't want to say it like this, but it kind of if you pick up a stray on the road, it makes it that much harder to get rid of them to in order to do what you need to do. You know what I'm saying? I think Darrell was not looking for any external attachment. Seems like, look, I'm just trying to get home. And if you and think about it, you know, if he took this boy under his wing, like, OK, yes, I'm going to let you help. First of all, that boy could have gotten Darrell killed because on that first day when he was talking about, you know, when they were sending them out to go find the walkers and stuff and dude was like, yeah, you know, I had some walkers turned around and pick up something and they got away.

4:26 Maybe, you know, maybe I can tag along with you and help you. No, because you're you would be the person to get Daryl killed on some stupid shit because Daryl would be too busy trying to save you. So no one that's not going to work 2 if Daryl takes this dude under his wing. This girl has already said I got a girlfriend whose father doesn't let her out. I told her I would take her away. So now you got dude, he's going to want he's going to want to go get his girlfriend and then girlfriends Pops might be like, hold up, y'all ain't going anywhere. And then you know, Daryl and Pop's going no, that's too much. Get him in the game and let him go home. No, he could have helped him to a point. He could have been like, well, because all the boy was trying to do was get fuel.

5:13 That's all he wanted was some fuel. I don't live that far. I just need gas for the car that I'm, you know, for us to get far away. He could have helped him to the point for that boy to get his gas. And look, I hope you get the gas. But after that, you know I'm done. That boy was trying to get gas to go to California. We already know they wouldn't have made it to California. We already come on, we know he wouldn't have made this out point, but you would have got enough gas to get away from the situation that you were in. Right. So you you would have left where you worked into a better situation hopefully. But Darrell, in my opinion there should have just helped the boy and then and then the the punch means because you feel bad because you didn't help him and look what the fuck happened.

6:06 That's where that punch came from. He mad at himself. So don't get mad at them 'cause you you saw the the signs before when they was being shitty to this little man. 'Cause they were acting like the Chryslers they were. Asking my child not to intervene but now why you getting pissed off punching somebody in the face when you ain't do what you were supposed to do to try to help? So don't. Don't be mad now. Well, never guys. And we see how it worked out for him. Yeah, end up on a fucking boat. Ends up on a boat where they're obviously doing some Walker experimentation. So and and again, because we've seen a little bit of it in earlier episodes, we know that that boat was controlled by Madam Janay. So we know that she's already doing experiments on walkers there in France, and we see a little bit more of that in this episode.

7:04 So yeah, it's just kind of like Daryl finds ways to get into situations that you just like. How? But again, the whole premise of them having Darrell in France, everybody wondered how in the world did this happen? How in the world did this happen? The way that they did explain it, it makes perfect sense, especially if you know, if you have someone coming from France looking for people who pretty much he's looking for people who aren't going to be missed, You know what I'm saying? You know, if you have people who are coming all the way from France to get these people and you could tell that French guy was already shady the way that he was kind of looking like OK, they have like these certain restrictions, like they can't be shorter than such and such. We don't take children and block. So it's kind of like at first I thought, why are y'all trying to take live people?

8:02 And then you realize, no, they want walkers that fit these, you know, that fit these requirements. And it's kind of like what y'all doing and why y'all coming all the way to the States because y'all are looking for people who aren't going to be missed. And obviously we've seen a friend ain't too many people. That's what I was going to say, 'cause we see friends don't have remember it was a, a, a deserted one. Darrell got there. Like we don't even see hordes in France. We don't think we've seen that one horde so. Maybe they took all they can for the experiment 'cause if that's the you, you go, you go. Use up with your the easiest first. So that could explain why there is no no no walkers anywhere, right?

8:48 Especially especially outside. We know they inside inside shops. And shit, yeah, right. But especially if, I mean, Quinn literally places a time frame on it in this episode when he's talking to Izzy about the jewelry he got her. He said. I didn't think I'd have to wait 12 years to give it to you. So it's been 12 years since he last saw her, which means Laurent is only 11 and some change. But we'll come back to that. We'll come back to that. But we do have at least a time frame. So, yeah, in 12 years, they could have gone all over the countryside and picked up walkers or even picked up people to experiment on because they could have used live people to say, hey, let's see what it is that causes it.

9:33 And then try to do whatever they needed to do with the walkers to try to cure or whatever it is they try to do, make weapons, whatever. But they're coming to the States because, OK, we're going to take people who aren't going to be missed. And you got people in this type of environment where, yeah, they're they're requiring people to go do certain things for them. And if they mess up, it's like, OK, you get one chance. You mess up, you don't follow our rules. That's it for you. I don't banish them. Y'all sent him on a. Fucking boat. I didn't take it that way. I didn't take it that they were looking OK. Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you were saying because I wasn't taking it as I thought.

10:21 We like when he met Darrell on the road and he gave him the rules for their commute, their, you know, settlement. I wasn't taking it as when we kick you out, we put you on a boat. I thought you just have to leave from where we are. Because my thought was when he was putting Darrell out, if I was driving and took my bike, took my, you know, my ball, my crossbow, All right, I got to go. No, I think if if Darrell had done what he what he was supposed to do, you know, collect the walkers in order to earn the gas, got the gas and went on, he would have been fine. But it was because he punched that guy. And the number one rule is no fighting. Right, but and that just said he that he said that gets you out of here. I didn't think out of here meant on a boat to France. I thought out of here, me, you know, I just gotta kick you out of my community.

11:07 Well, you know what? I mean that that was my perception of it, I thought. So too, but apparently that wasn't the case 'cause. When he put him on the bottom like. Right now how you you gonna send him home in this? Like how much gas do y'all like First of all, making all this gas. That is a full ship. That's not like the little thing that Rick was on. That's a full ship going from Maine to France. Well, I mean, it didn't make it to France, but that's because, you know. Yeah. But. That was the intention of it, yes.

11:49 And obviously that wasn't the first time that they had come there because they had a report, they had a routine. But we also know that the Croat figured out how to make gas. That's true. So he did. Say that he couldn't be the only person. Right, he ain't the only one who figured out how to make gas 'cause there's nothing even in the ones that live. Yeah. Every everybody's car had gas, so they figured out a way. Like, even if the Crowat wasn't the one to tell P, you know he ain't the only smart person left in the apocalypse. Right. We hope not. Anyway, 'cause who? But at least, you know, people are figuring out like you say we 12 years into the apocalypse, people are figuring out 'cause I was saying the same thing when when brought Isabel breakfast and she, he was like, oh, you know, she can bake you up whatever you want. And I'm like, yeah, it's been 12 years. People know how to, you know, make the necessities that we need in order to survive.

12:53 So if you're on a on a uptick of figuring out what we lost and now how to regain and redo so that we are no longer in the place that we were when we initially started. Right. But also, we got to think about Quinn. You know, we talked about this, and I think it was either episode 3 or Episode 4. Quinn seems like the type of person who knows how to get things and who knows where to find things. And he even says it in this episode that that's one of the reasons Madam Janay has formed this partnership with him, because he can get things. He mentioned to Izzy, he said when he was talking about the clothes that he had brought her and the painting, He said I have a warehouse full of things that are at your disposal. So I believe that when everything went to shit, you know, even like with the jewelry, he told Isabel. He said, yeah.

13:44 He said after you left, I could have walked on. I don't remember what the street name was, but I'm guessing it was kind of like the Rodeo Dr. of Paris. He was like, I couldn't, you know, people could walk in there and take things by the handful. You mean to tell me Quinn didn't? Because I told you he seems like a opportunist. He seems like somebody who knows how to keep things going and how to keep himself afloat. I mean, think about it, 12 years into a zombie apocalypse, this man had a fully stocked nightclub going on, performers, alcohol, everything. You can't tell me that he probably doesn't have stuff stashed away. Like I said, he probably sent people out to forage and to get stuff and he uses that as collateral and that's how he's been able to stay where he is. But yeah, Quinn, just, he seems like the type of person who was able to just like you know how some people when a zombie apocalypse or just any type of doomsday type thing that we've seen you, there's some people who just can't handle it, don't know what to do.

14:54 And then you have some people who thrive in that kind of environment because they already know how to get around certain rules and they know how to. This was made for Quinn. Absolutely. Because I again, like I said, he moved Izzy to this mansion. First of all, the fact that y'all had to drug her to bring her in there. Oh, you were having nightmares. We gave you something to calm you down, really. And for me it was like clearly cause 'cause being at the nightclub, one would think this is where you, this is where you are.

15:37 And then to go and you in this elaborate mansion on this compound with fancy beds and fancy shit and just. Right. You just wouldn't took you a house. Like a laid out breakfast. Like how you getting this kind of spread brunch spread 12 years into the zombie apocalypse, Like what kind of food storage system are you using to have all this stuff? And I mean, like you said, 12 years and people probably have figured out how to make stuff and that sort of thing. I'm I'm sure he's probably got chicken somewhere to have fresh eggs and everything. But I was just like, you got the alcohol and the champagne and you got jewelry here and everything is just so nice. And you look, he's the one person who actually has decent guards.

16:29 Looks like 'cause you got him all over the. He paid, he get him. They treat it well. He treat them well. He has to. That's who he act. Treat him well, Marie. What I thought of her name was Anna. Is. It Marie. Are you sure? Yes, it's. Marie. We'll call her Marie. But this exercise? I've said this in the last episode. I said you are sit here and treat this woman like garbage because Izzy has shown back up in your life and you're expecting her to just be OK with this and not when she walked in that door and she was sitting there waiting for him to come out that room and she just dropped that glass. I said oh you don't fucked up now brother. I said she going to do something to you now and and I think I think I said something about her going to Madam Janae and y'all were telling me I was wrong.

17:38 What did she do? She went straight to Madam Janae told. But she still ain't got to me here like you're doing all the. Way you back. You still ain't got him. You still like they should. I wouldn't want him at that point because you clearly have chosen this chick who left you in the dust 12 years ago over me and I'm supposed to what, Turn you in and then slip? No, no, no, brother. If that's the if that's the case, she should have did that at the nightclub when she showed up. Are you having all these conversations? Because you did that then because I don't think she, she didn't think that Isabel was going to come back. Isabel wasn't going to come back. The only reason why Izzy came back was because she knew that he would be the person who could get Daryl and Laurent out of the city.

18:27 Like he could make that happen. And that's what he did. She's keeping up her bargain. But of course, Maria's like, oh, that's what you want, OK. I'm about to fuck you and all your life up. Like, you gonna treat me? You gonna throw me away for somebody who don't even want you? Ah, OK, I got you. I don't even want you and was about to kill you. So you had this profound thought about Abraham and redemption. Sir, it was 2 seconds for me and stabbed in the jugular with the corner of a cabinet. Right now, not even the corner of a cabinet, that was a piece from the mirror.

19:12 It was like the the the decorative piece on the mirror. Whatever it was, she could have slugged him in the head with that statue. It she don't like you? But you know, I don't think. What part of that? I really don't think she thought that through very well, because even if she had killed him, where would she have gone? How would she? She don't even know what she is right now. And and then how you going to get past the guards? Exactly 'cause like I said, those guards seem like they actually know what they do, but. Then my, my thought was because, OK, so going back just for a hot second, when the I can't think what her name is the Hostess.

19:55 We just gonna call it a Hostess. But I can think the lady who kept bringing her the food. Oh, yes. The so in the initial, the Hostess, she was the one who was like, Oh yeah, we gave you something so you could sleep. So in my mind, I'm like, oh, you gotta keep an eye on her. But then she the next day when she brings her breakfast and she was like, the eggs are really fresh. You wanna have eggs? She was like, we should say your friend brought on something. Tell your friend thank you. She's like, well, it wasn't my friend. But now you're passing. No. Right. So where are you on this spectrum? I think she might be one of those people who are like, OK, you know what? I'm gonna stay. I'm staying here and I'm being loyal because I'm being taken care.

20:36 I mean, think about it. If you have your choice, and we say this when we talk about Negan and and the Saviors and the Sanctuary all the time. If you have your choice between being out on the road, living off what is left of the land, dodging walkers right and left, dodging dodgy people right and left. Or you can be laid up in this mansion, nicely dressed, clean, eating real food and all you have to do is serve the person who is in charge and it's obvious he ain't fucking with the help because he had Marie before Quinn came up. So all I got to do is just sit here and wait on your hand and foot and I ain't got to deal with none of that out there. And a zombie apocalypse.

I don't have to worry about catching fish and gutting them because I will catch a fish all day long. You will not get me to gut them. I'm with Laurent on this. What he say sometimes you got to do things you don't want to do. No, I'll go. I'll go be queen. I'll go be queen Housekeeper. I will go clean the mansion. I will go do whatever I need to do. I would go pass secret messages from. Who? What was probably Falou and what's her name? Sophie.

22:08 I will do all of that because I am I. I will be dead, honest. I am not made for a zombie apocalypse. I am not. I like my creature comforts too much. No, I'll go be the housekeeper. I'll go be the housekeeper. Just be taken care of, huh? But that does have limits, like, like Marie has, because Marie was like, oh, you, you, you want her. OK, OK. I'm gone. Because what did she say in the last episode to him when she was telling him she was like, when she's gone for good? And he said, oh, really?

22:50 She said sometimes. What? What did she say? Women need a reason to stay. And what did she say? Some women need to, I can't remember. She said something about some some women have reasons for walking away and some need a reason to stay. And I was like, dude, you're not giving this chick no reason to stay. You find enough that the ex-girlfriend you're you're like literally she's trying to touch you and you're just kind of like, oh, don't touch me. Don't touch me when you were probably all over her a few days ago and then you want to bring your son that nobody knew about in here and you want the girlfriend who's being currently spurned to watch over him and you give her a loaded gun to protect him.

23:43 Like I said, if I was her at that point, he probably would have been shot. But I think what she did was so much better because shooting him, killing him, that would have been too quick. There would have been no like the satisfaction wouldn't wouldn't be there because oh, you hurt me in such a horrendous way and now you get to just like I'm a shoot you and you die and that's going to be it. But I'm still going to be sitting here hurting because of what you did. No, let me find another way to wreck your life. Hey, girl, let me tell you about Quinn. When you was over here looking for this boy, he had the boy upstairs. Or he knew where he was and he was lying to you.

24:25 And oh, yeah, he also made it so the boy could get out of Paris, girl. So much more satisfying. Did you see the look she gave him when he walked in to that little dungeon and he saw her sitting there and his brain cells started rubbing together like, oh, wait a minute, you're the one who did you see the look of satisfaction on her face? That was a one true satisfaction. If now walkers are going to tell him, tear him apart, is that satisfaction? It would be for me. Like you like OK, I get the OK when you pissed off your piss you you always pissed off to a point you pissed off to the point you want this mother fucker be because granted Darrell's in the pit and we know Darrell is Darrell and Darrell was. That was going down some.

25:20 Stuff up. I don't think Quinn has that level of expertise. No, he doesn't. So you, by you doing this, you have to know that you're killing this man. You so mad at me you want me to die? Probably so, because guess what? If she's been with him any length of time before this, she probably knows where all the bodies of birds. She knows where the whale houses are. You saw she just strolled up to the mansion and walked her ass on in like she had been. Let me tell you, if this man is dead, she already knows. Izzy don't want no, no part of this. Guess who's in charge now?

Yes, she is a plotter, but I don't see her being authoritative where anybody is going to be like, oh, oh. Yeah, got to be she and Madam Janae's good graces right now. Madam Janae is probably like, oh, you know what? So I got you. You you want to take control of this? Yeah. Because now she can control Marie. Oh, this is what I need. I need this. I need that. I need this champagne. But Marie ain't going to make it. But you know what, she might not. But for right now, she is on top of the world and that's all she needs.

We don't care about anything else. Like if she survives, if she takes over his empire. I really don't care about all of that because no, you, you got him trying to sort it out of the way for the moment. So do you know what I'm, I'm not mad at her. I'm really not because it's bad enough, huh? I can't wait for her face to give it off. Oh, so why you like Quinn?

27:33 No, I don't like Marie's double crossing ass. Like except the fact that you lost. It's a zombie apocalypse. Men look love and men are few and far between. This man has been taking care of you for years and all of a sudden you being casted aside. I would be pissed too. I would be petty Betty. Yes, I absolutely would if I think it'll be. It would be different if it was regular times, like not in a zombie apocalypse, like if she could just go anywhere else. If she could just, oh, you, you don't want me? I'm going to go. I'm a, I'm a find another club to work at, whatever. But Quinn, her relationship with Quinn at this point is so much a part of who she is because not only is she the girlfriend, she's also the entertainer at the club. She's the one that, you know, it's like he's been taking care of her because obviously she ain't taking care of herself. I mean, just what we see from her as a character, she does not seem like really the I don't want to say she she doesn't seem like the self-sufficient type, but almost kind of like that damsel in distress, like, OK, I'm I'm going to stay with him. And because you can't tell me this is the first time that he's treated her like he didn't want to be bothered by her, right? People like him, they get in those moves off and on. So she knows what he's like, but

29:07 she probably just didn't think, OK, you know what? He just going to toss me aside for whatever. And then he did. And she's like, oh, OK, you know what, whatever. I mean, I'm not mad at him because Quinn is trash. He is definitely. He's sitting there expecting Izzy to want to be with him again, to want to pick up where they left off. Dude, the last time I saw you, you told me that you were the father of my sister's baby and I'm supposed to be all hot and heavy ready to jump your No do that at.

29:50 But I love you, girl. Again, I need to know what easy got going on 'cause this is 12 years down the road and he's still looking at her like, do you love me? She. Got golden in there with fan. She must she. Must. But anyway, OK, so let's step away from Quinn and easy and them 'cause we got to come back to them later on. Let's talk about Daryl a little bit. So as we talked about it at the beginning of this episode, Daryl was off minding his own business somewhere near the coast of Maine. His bike had run out of gas.

30:32 He comes across this guy who's like, hey, we have ways for you to get the gas, but you got to work for it. OK? Daryl is no stranger to doing that type of thing. So he goes, he finds out what they're trying to do. They're they're gathering up walkers for what reason? They don't say Darryl really doesn't care. He's just like, OK, are you going to give me my gas? So what they do is they put a limit like for the more, the more walkers you bring in, the more gas you get. So of course you have this one group of assholes. Like I said, they were, I'll call them claimers 2 point O because that's kind of the vibe they were given. You have them come in with five walkers. Darryl comes in with like 7 or 8 all together. OK.

31:19 Oh, and at least that answers the question of where his damn crossbow is. It's probably still in Maine because he had it in this scene. So while he's at this place, this this kid kind of like a older, I would say, maybe late teens, early 20s, very clearly out of place, very clearly does not know what he's doing. But he's there because he's trying to get gas. He puts himself on the old, you know, claimers 2 point O radar. And of course, they start bullying him and stuff. OK, Daryl don't want nothing to do with this. Daryl just trying to get his gas so he can go home. Now, during this part, Daryl gets access to a radio. And whose voice do we hear Carol? Oh yeah.

32:07 So she finally makes not necessarily an appearance in this episode, but we do hear her voice. They do have a conversation. Daryl tells her where where she he is. And he keeps asking her. He's like, are you OK? Now? The conversation is interesting because the first time he asks it, she says, yeah, just take some getting used to. And he's sitting there holding the radio like he's waiting for her to elaborate. Like, what takes getting used to. Then he says it again. Are you OK? Are you sure you're OK? I'll be home in a week. Are you OK? She was like, Daryl, you don't have to worry about me. And then after pause, she's like Daryl. And you kind of hear static starting to interrupt the the signal. And she says blank, Blank came home. Now, of course, we're all going crazy because when this originally aired, this was before the ones who live had aired.

33:01 So we're all like, who is she saying came home? Is she saying Michonne came home? Did Rick come home? Did somebody else? Like, we didn't know. We actually still don't know. We can only speculate because of the fact that Michonne and Rick have come back. But I haven't had time to go back right now and do this math, especially after remembering Quinn said it's been 12 years, 'cause I'm pretty sure it had been longer than that for Michonne and Rick from the time they came back. So I'm like, OK, we don't have to go through, figure this out, figure the timeline. It could be Rick and Michonne. And that's what takes getting used to. But.

33:42 I was Morgan. My my thought initially when it aired was Morgan. Yeah, 'cause we know Morgan left fear to go back to Alexandria. So fine, Rick, Yeah. So that was my thought that Morgan came back because that was all they really, really left during that Morgan. We knew Morgan was gone. But even though he left, you know, seasons before, but aside from Rick and Michonne going, you know, on their thing, Morgan was the only other person that really left that Darrell really knew. You know, we've had people come and go, but we know Morgan was a part of that community, you know, for so long, for as much as he did before he, you know, we had to clear and leave.

34:29 Right. So my thought has always been Morgan. Even now, even after the other show went off, my thought is still Morgan. And I think the only thing that would make me say is not Morgan is because even though Morgan was a part of the community, he and Darryl never really had that much interaction. You know, Morgan's whole thing was Rick because that was his, that was his tether to the old world because Rick was he was the one that found Rick and you know, all that stuff. So it could make sense. But I feel like it would have more of an impact if it had been Rick or Michelle, especially Michelle, because Darren knew the Michelle went out there.

35:18 But my thought. But if that's the case and I'm on the phone with you and I tell you, oh, Rick came back, that I wouldn't live with that. Yeah. Yeah. How are you doing? I'm great. But guess what? You. Understand what? Which makes me think it's somebody important, but not as important as Rick. OK, 'cause if Rick comes home, that is she know why Darrell left, right? So if Rick came home, the first thing I'm saying, Rick is here, you need to come home. Like your search is over. Come home. Yeah. Which is another reason I still believe it's Morgan, because your whole purpose for being out, for leaving, I'm going to look. I'm going to see what clues I can find. That was your purpose.

36:01 Yeah, you're right. And so if the purpose that you left is like, that's the first thing, I'm like, Oh my God. Darrell, this issue, Rick's here. Come home. Right. I'm not gonna have no conversation about how you could figure out how new when you get home. I'm not gonna have these conversations, which makes me think it's somebody not as high as Rick, Right? Because if I say if, if if you wanna phone with me and you say Casey is Michelle. I'm on my way. Like, I don't care how you doing. I don't care about none of that. I'm on my way. Oh, OK. Say less. We had, we had this whole big conversation about this two episodes ago about what they should have done at the Abbey and how they should have treated him and how they should have been training him and all this other stuff.

And then, of course, they get captured later because they hear the trucks coming. The truck stops because they find the stuff. And I guess because of the the note, the message that Izzy received, she realized that's where Falou and Sophie were going to be.
